Ground Relay

I am just wondering, what is a ground relay on a locomotive?

The ground relay protcts the high voltage systems on the locomotive i.e. traction motors and main generator.

it trips if thier is a short of some kind to just as mr beck said…to protect the eletrical system… if i remember correctly…(been a while since i was in engineers school) it will trip 4 times befor it automaticly puts the locomotive in idel or something like that…

On the NS after the third ground relay trip,we are to isolate that unit.Because it’s more than likely a problem in the ground relay protection grid, that has to be repaired at a major shop.

Its comparable to GFI outlet in your bathroom, a Ground fault relay will trip the Generator field if a High voltage leak to locomotive frame is detected.
On locomotives if the ground occurs above 6th notch the locomotive shuts down.
on 6th notch and below it will go back to Idle till locomotive engineer resets ground relay.
Ground faults can be anything like chafed wire, a carbon brush pigtail loose, or a motor or generator so dirty it flashes over, damaging internal insulation.

I believe you have access to the SOO GP-30 # 700. Look in the main electrical cabinet ( the rear wall of the unit) you will see a relay marked GR.

Careful there Max, you are learning way to much these days. [;)] Heck, before long you might be asking how to reset the PC when it kicks. [:p] [8D] [:D] Come to think of it, I bet you already know that too. [:D]
