I presume you mean GP-9, no such thing as GT-9. Electro Motive Division began GP9 deliveries in 1954 as the sucessor to the 1949 introduced GP-7. Once upon a time one could find more GP9s for a given road as opposed to the GP-7 as by 1954 most roads were in the process of retiring steam in massive numbers or had already done so. EMD would build to suit a individule end user with a extensive options list to choose from, a attractive selling point to steam holdouts such as Union Pacific and Norfolk & Western to name but two.
The Geeps proved EMD did its homework regarding what railroads wanted, many worked into the 1990s wearing the colors of their orginal owners or merger partners , rebuilt or not. Easy to maintain, reliable, and good parts availibilty for the 567 engines and generators makes them a contender for the shortline, locomotive rebuilder market to this day.
