Guess the prime mover...

Let’s play a little game of guessing

If anyone has some clear clips of a specific engine, post and we’ll all guess which prime mover it is.
(but not just series, but the exact model)

Here is the first one to guess (in the link, sorry about the anoying file service)

The winner gets a “good job” or “well done” depending on his preferences

EMD 16-645E3

nope, try again

If I had to hazard a guess, I’d go with a turbocharged 16 cylinder 710, though I’m not sure what exact model.

It’s not any 710 engine. It’s not a 645F engine either. The turbos on those have a different sound. I’d say it’s a 16-567C3 …

it could be a 20-645E3.

this is fun, you all have sort of surrounded the answer all around, but still non of the answers are true.

Don’t let the RPM fool you though, this is probably not true idle

keep 'em comming

OK fine, I’m going to pull this outta my butt then.

I was wrong about the 710 - it’s a 16-710G3 in Run 1. And it’s in a GP60.

wrong again

here’s a tip: y’all are giving this sound a bit too much credit

Gotcha. 12-645E3 GP/SD39/-2

You want a “good job” or a “well done”?

ok, anyone have any other clips? Post anything

Ok, here is one more.

Some of you might tell instantly if you recognise this recording, so please let those who never heard it before guess first

This is an in-cab recording, so the sound is a bit different. This is idle.
Idle can be a relative thing depending on wheather the engine has the factory RMP setting or was modified, so again don’t let the RPM fool you. Think about the texture.
So which prime mover is this?

This time the winner gets a virtual pat on the back

Man, that sounds a lot like the GP38-2 in MSTS. Idle is definately up a little. How about it? 16V 645E Non-turbo?

No, it’s not that sound, check your game again and you’ll see

Now THAT’S a 16-645E3.

Idle or Run 1.

Yea, what made you so sure about it? Is there something unique about 16-645E3 that gives it away?

Yeah, I’ve been in the cabs of almost all of the SP GP40M-2 (MK GP40-2) rebuilds, at least once, over a year or so and while in the cab, this is exactly what I heard. Since the GP40-2 uses this prime mover, there you go!

You hear more of the engine than the turbo, but you still hear the turbo if you know what to listen for.

Good to know, I use this sound for all my 645 turbo engines in MSTS, I’m glad it’s realistic.

Have you ever been in a cab of a 710 engine (like sd70m and such). How different it is from this?

I’ve been in the cab of a GP60 - turbo has a slightly different sound to it, but otherwise the same. The turbo on the 710 sounds like the 645 with some harmonic overtones that are higher in pitch. More “musical”, as it were.

I always felt that the most musical engines are 645 roots blower engines. They sound like a musical chord changing pitch when they change the RPM. Plus I love the rugged chug when you notch up. It’s music
