Came across this vendor. Seems to have a broad array of items from junk to quite collectable. I was about to bid on an item when I noticed there S&H charges for delivery to Canada.
I’ve run across a number of these particularly the last year and a half. I usually avoid them like the plague. Occasionally if it is an item that is truly unique and desireable I will contact the seller and state that I am willing to bid but I find the shipping completely unreasonable.
I have had answers from this “Well don’t bid then” To " I was only trying to cover all my bases, send me your postal code and I will tell you exactly what it will be". And then sometimes they come back with a acceptable amount.
But don’t give in to the GOUGERS as we don’t want them on the BAY anyway, and be patient as the item in most cases will show up again from someone else.
I’ve ordered a few items from them and have also had to return an item. I find them to be very reputable. I would reccomend them in a heartbeat. I am in the U.S. As far as the shipping charges, I have sold a few items on ebay myself and have found that shipping to Canada be can anywhere from very high to outrageous. UPS is the worst. I do not know why it is that way, but it is. It’s too bad. USPS International Priority, while still high seems to be the most reasonable. We’re neighbors and these outrageous shipping charges do not help either of us.
I’ve bid on several of their listings, but never won one. The charge they list looks like a UPS estimate. You might email them to see if they would consider USPS Priority International. Many sellers avoid international shipping. My wife’s business has some foreign customers. We find that its easier (but not cheaper) to ship to Australia than to Canada. If you live close to the border and have friends in the US close to the border, have things shipped to them and then go for an occasional visit and pick up your stuff.
It works the other way, too – I’ve seen items on e-Bay where the shipping charges from Canada to the U.S. or from some other foreign country are $40 or more.
I recently bid for and won a NIB Digitrax DB150 from them. Bid was $119 and shipping $6.99.
They shipped very quickly and item was perfect.
However, to be fair, shipping to Canada can be a bit expensive if you don’t do some extra work.
I’ve shipped to Canada before and if your package you’re sending is more than 4lbs and over the combined L+W+H=36" dimension limit then the USPS only allows Priority Mail International or better type service. For parcels that fall under those limits you can use 1st Class International.
Typically priority rates are at least double the 1st class international rates
Without knowing the particulars of how that item would be shipped it could be that Trainz estimated the shipping box size and weight over the 1st class international limits and thus the higher shipping cost.
it’s a fact that shipping outside the US is not cheap anymore so international buyers need to be aware of the limitations and higher costs.
Trainz is highly reguarded on the CTT forum. I have won two items from them on eBay, both excellent deals and I am very happy with them. They are a buisness that ships a lot. I am guessing that is the actual shipping cost to Canada.
I sold an older Rivarossi cab forward on Ebay at least 3 years ago. The person who bought it lives in Germany. I went right to the post office to see it off. The shipping came out to be around $40.00 with insurance from California to Germany. I myself gringed at the amount, and I do not add handleing fees but the buyer had no issues paying for it. And he loves the loco.
I had to sacrifice it for the newer BLI version with QSI sound.
I have made several ebay purchases from Tranz. The transactions were all completed professionally.
As to their supposedly high shipping charges to Canada I can’t say. My ebay experience shipping to Canada hasn’t been very good and trying to get any payments cashed on Canadian banks has made me state in all my auctions that I will not ship to Canada. Every time I tried it was a fiasco. The last one took me several months to get straightened out. Maybe I’m just lucky?
I have recently shipped two boxes from IL too Germany for a friend. First box was around 2 pounds and cost $20.00. Second box was around 5 pounds and cost $44.00.
I didn’t make an error. The checks & MOs were in US dollars and no one would cash them. My bank and my credit union wouldn’t. I didn’t have ebay/PayPal at the time to screw me for additional fees either. It’s easier to just not get into that mess again. Maybe you should learn the facts before you comment.
I ALSO have 100% feedback, since 1998, but what’s that got to do with it?.
Speaking of ebay/PayPal…I just sold an item for $450 and between those two thieving #@$%^$##@ it cost me $61.14. Kinda makes me think I made a mistake there though!

Hi Rodger, sorry you are so touchy.
I have checked, and it is my experience with the 400 sellers I’ve dealt with they had no problems cashing US money orders. So I suggest you have a good long talk with your banking or Credit Union service as it is those folks that don’t get it.
Now cheques are a different issue, and if you re-read my original posting you will notice that I didn’t mention cheques, so why would you in your reply??
When a US money order arrives it is as good as cash.
This won’t help for your question about their shipping charges, but I’ve ordered a few items from them in the past. Unfortunately, I had ordered two of one boxcar (it was one where there are “X available” listed in the ad), and they apparently have a fairly large inventory. The person pulling the order missed that I bought (& paid for) two, and only pulled one, so my combined orders arrived one short on the boxcars. [sigh] They did refund my price for the second one (it apparently got sold to someone else, I guess), which was about all they could do at that point. However, I will not bid on any of their auctions in the future, because I don’t want to risk that person being the one [D)] who pulls my order and misses something again…
I’d give them a B- or C+, so to speak, as I want to be able to count on getting an item when I bid on it.
