I do have a small number of UP because UP pooled with D&RGW on the Kaiser Coal train that originated on the Rio Grande and passed to the UP down in Southern California.
I was surprised how inexepensive I was able to get my Atlas sound equipped N scale SD45’s. I paid $143 for several DCC sound equipped SD45’s; the MSRP was listed as $279.95. That’s nearly half price!
How is north Brit doing? My wife, who is also a north Brit is sitting here on the sofa. We are expecting up to 12" of snow in the northern Virginia Washington DC area over night.
Dang, now I’ve learnd something new. Didn’t know that Rio. And don’t know what it is, but for some reason, I’ve really taken a liking to the flat green hoods on these UP machines.
The Stang has a flat black one.
You’re surroundings are turning out rather well, I’d say too.

PS Enjoy that 12 inches of snow, North Brit is dealing with Snow Rollers.
Found it awhile back, but just finished building it. The core kit was an “Indianapolis Car Company” coach (plainly meant to look Pullman-built) dating from some point prior to 1963, since the address on the kit had no zip code.
Found myself one of Rapido’s New Haven Osgood Bradley coaches in N scale online for a semi reasonable price recently, so that’ll be arriving soon, and I can’t wait for my Atlas NH RS-3 with LokSound to get here ( a late Christmas present to myself!) If I remember, I’ll come back here and post pictures when they get here. Otherwise, nothing since beginning of December other than decoders and keep alives, which are certainly goodies, just not pretty or shiny ones!
Great find on the coach and the RS-3! Do you predominantly model the NH?
Keeping up the trend of New Haven, I also got a RS-3, in HO though. Been breaking it in and getting it programed before I bring it to the club this week.
Thanks! I’m a huge fan of the New Haven (Grew up near Hopewell Junction on the Maybrook and have spent dozens of hours volunteering at the depot there), I model basically what if the NH went bankrupt in the 50s rather than the 60s, and the ICC mandated that my smaller fictional railroad would be the operator of the railroad, so in my history the bridge never burns and the NH doesn’t merge into my B&CCS until the early 80s, so I can run New Haven stuff (U boats, Centuries, Geeps, and eventually I plan on working up a paint scheme for a Dash 7 to continue the lineage) alongside my B&CCS stuff (Geeps and SD40-2s, B30-7s and 40-8s, and some Centuries mostly). I model 75-85, so I can have a good mix of NH, B&CCS, NYC, PRR, PC, CR, EL, CNJ, etc. cars. You can see more at my website bccsrailroad.weebly.com if you want! And enjoy running that RS-3! Can’t wait to get mine (hopefully next week)!
Great work on the website! I’m definitely interested to see how the upcoming 4’ by 8’ comes along, as the switching layout already looks fantastic. Also, really enjoyed reading the history of your protofreelanced railroad and how that opens the door to operate such a varied list of equipment.
Thanks Jim! Although I guess I need to update my website lol, I decided not to build the 4x8 and instead begin research to prep for building a layout of the Poughkeepsie Hospital Branch once I’m all moved out of my family’s house! Appreciate the kind words regardless and will do!
I remembered! My new black and orange Osgood Bradley coach arrived in the mail today! I need to get some batteries for the lighting, and I’m still waiting on the RS-3 that will be this train’s standard power, but I put it on my switching layout with my other Rapido Osgood Bradley coach and my Atlas 60’ coach in McGinnis colors to take a couple of pictures!
Just before the Holidays I treated myself to some of the Rapido X23 and R7 box cars and reefers. Never thought I’d see these in the mass market. Like so many other modelers I had several of the Westerfield kits but no where near the time or ambition to even start them!
There’s a few more but I won’t hog up any more space
Now I’m waiting for the USPS to bring me yet another treat! I found not one but TWO B&O wagon-top covered hopper cars! Cost me more than my first car (and it was a Cadillac!).
Photos, of course, when they arrive.
Hey model railroad fans, new to this site but not too the hobby. Have 5 scales (G/O/HO/N and Z ) all running in one ‘train room’ about 30 by 15 feet. Last few years have not really been running the trains, especially the HO (which is the main layout). Now I find that my digital engines (mostly new but purchase years ago, sitting on shelves) light up, sound comes on, but will not move. This occurs on about 85% of my engine stock, some engines do run. I cannot figure out what is wrong. Do HO engines go bad??? Or do I need to reprogram them. Track is clean, connections are good as other engines do work. Thank you all in advance for some advise. Best David
Ahh, I cannot recall ever using that term for decoder equipped locomotives, but it certainly is a correct term.
Anyhow, the decoders have likely fallen asleep so your best bet is to confirm that by resetting the decoder on one of them to factory default. On a Digitrax decoder, the reset would be CV08=08. Since the programming has been limited in your locomotives, once you do the reset, you will only need to reprogram the cab address. If that works, you can just do that for all of your sleeping decoders.
I’ve seen this in a few posts now and am curious - what is the technical reason that a decoder would “fall asleep”? I would think that when programmed, the decoder would be designed to store the data in an EEPROM, which should keep its memory for a very long time. Or is there some other mechanism (capacitor?) where it is necessary for the decoders to be powered up periodically to retain their memory?
I wish I knew why some decoders fall asleep, but I don’t know why. With sound decoders, it seems that the lights and sound almost always come on but not the movement. Usually, it requires a reset to factory default, but with some decoders you can wake them up by pressing a certain Function Key (F6?).
You might want to start a new thread in the electronics section to get more answers. The reset command might be different on some of these engines. More info will be required about them (model and age). You might want to add the type of Digitrax system you are using.
