Having Problems with the Quote Feature

I use both my iPhone and laptop to view and reply to posts, depending upon where I am at given times.

Sometimes, not always, when I highlight a Quote and use it to start my reply, it ends up missing in my reply. So, I have to edit my reply in order to Copy and Paste the Quote.

What am I doing wrong?

Whenever you quote the entire previous post, it apparently automatically removes it–probably to avoid repetition.

What he means is something I have observed periodically: that sometimes when you select text, the little ā€˜quote’ control that appears after the selected text does not display. This may or not be regular based on something I’m doing as I select.

So far, whenever that happens, I can go back and re-select the text and the control will appear.

I do find the way Discourse quotes a prior post with more than one level of quoting already in it to be counterintuitive – you cannot select the whole post without excessive header information, so you have to make do with what you can select and have ā€˜quote’ appear.

Now I am all for requiring people to snip their posts, but nested quotes are being selected voluntarily here.

That is exactly my problem.

Yes, not good.

Yep, I have seen that happen as well.

Sometimes I can’t select the text in a post. I just reload it quick and it always seems to work.

OK, now that’s weird. I am carefully watching what I do on my replies because it doesn’t always happen.

Turns out, I can include full quotes on my smart phone but not on my laptop.

Interesting. I’m not really following the smartphone aspect since I don’t use one very often here, but are you seeing the little quote bubble on the laptop as in the below pic (to the left of the B for Bold)? That’s how I got it to quote your whole post after selecting the reply/curved arrow to initiate a reply. (or did I maybe misunderstand and the problem is only for ā€œnestedā€ quotes within quotes?)

What I do on my laptop is to highlight the text to be quoted with my mouse. That brings up a bar with Quote, Copy Quote, and Share. I click on Quote.

Ok, I had not used that before, but did above. Maybe there are browser differences in play here too. (I’m on FireFox on a Win 11 machine)

I’ll be honest to do smaller amounts of quoting I probably still use old control key shortcuts and do it manually. I’ve been hitting ctrl-c and ctrl-v for long enough I do it almost without thinking, so I normally don’t seek or notice nifty little tooltips like the bar that shows up when text is highlighted (but now that I know it’s there maybe I will use it, this saves a keystroke  ).

Good luck.

(edited to add: I just noticed when it’s your own post, the bar allows edits also, saving from having to click on the edit pencil and go into the larger editing window. Sorry, I’m now verging on serious thread drift, but I hope you guys can figure this out for your machines/browsers/phones)
