Welcome aboard. There is a wealth of talent and experience on this board and it is a great place to learn about Model Railroading.
Not from MN, I’m living in the Big Sky Country, and since the internet is making the world a much smaller place, we’re practically neighbors.

My parents met at the University of Minnesota. Does that count?
Unfortunately, I was born in Wisconsin, and grew up in Pennsylvania, went to college in New York, and now live in Connecticut. I keep getting farther away from the Twin Cities!

Hello,
& Welcome Back, many modelers here will love to share info & suggestions.
I’m from NE IA & model DME&ICE, but many other as, MILW, BNSF, DRGW, & some Canadian Roads…
It sounds like you are on the right track with really thinking & planning your layout & style. One thing that has helped me quite a bit is to try making scale scetches of your track plan & footprinting your major sctructures & landscaping before building. You will easily begin to read what will work & what may be a challenge. Best of luck!
Hey Ray, glad to have you with us.
