Help finding a Swedish engine.

Well as my first post to the forums, I was looking for some help finiding an engine.

My layout is going to be a fictional area using all sorts of inspiration from the railroads of here in Ontario, Canada.

One of the trains I want to include is a local steam train that runs from Chelsea, QC to Wakefield, QC, just north of Ottawa, Ontario in the Gatineau hills.

They use a Swedish 2-8-0 engine, built in 1907. I can’t seem to find who exactly made it, but I would like something the closely resembles it.

Here are some photos of thier engine:

engine #1

engine #2

Does anyone know what engine this is?

Also, Does anyone know where I can purchase a HO scale engine of this??

Thank’s for your help…

There are a couple of Swedish modelers who drop by here regularly, and a few other European modelers as well.

My first suggestion would be to go to your original post and push the “Edit” button. Then you can change the title of the post to something like “Help finding a Swedish engine.” Since you know that much already, the more explicit description is more likely to catch the right eyes.

There are several European modeling groups. Some have web sites. You might find some contact information and ask someone in one of these groups if they recognize the engine.

While I can’t offer you any help (at least at the moment), I would also love to know what is available to model the HCW Steam Train. I lived my earliest years growing up just up the road from Wakefield, so that train has a very special place in my early memories! I too would love to model it in HO scale.

Looks like an E class (“littera E” in Swedish) steam engine.

According to this web page (http://www.skanskajarnvagar.se/lok/lok2.htm) 130 were built between 1907 and 1920, of which 90 were lengthened into class E2 between 1935 and 1951 (made longer and turned into 2-8-2).

Quite a few of these engines were kept on in the Swedish wartime emergency pool from 1969 until about 1990 (the theory being that coal potentially could be easier to get hold of than diesel fuel as replacement power if electric power stations were damaged in war, I presume - the Swedes has been quite creative about signaling their intent to fight on for a long time if attacked).

Swedish model railroad company Jeco produced some kits for building E class steam engines. No idea if you still can get them. Look for “littera E ånglok” while googling.

Have you tried Volvo.com? [:D]

Sounds about as sensible as looking at http://www.ford.com when you are looking for H0 scale models of American trains …

Looks like Jeco has a website, and that they just has ordered a batch of RTR E class H0 scale engines - their web page say “ordered, not yet in store”:

4195 Swedish kronor for a DC model with sound is about $592. Freight and handling comes in addition.

No idea whether they by DC means straight DC or DCC is implied when the engine comes with sound. Ac indicates Märklin style train - with a current pickup under the middle of the engine and studs along the center of the track.

Try e-mail Jeco, they should now English so there shouldn’t be the slightest problem. If you need any help with finding something in Sweden on a Swedish site I’ll be happy to help out. The Norwegians and any danes(?) can also understand Swedish so don’t hesitate to ask here on the forum.

But remember that Swedish engines are rarer and much more expensive. I’m not an expert in any way about the older Swedish engines but I’m under the impression that most of them are brass kits that will need to be built. Often the cars needs extra parts to be completed and so on.

I would also recomend this forum: http://www.stinsensforum.se/board/index.html so you can ask questions to the people that are much better at answering them.

Lok is the category where you want to post the question in. LOK=ENGINE

Just write it in English, most people there will be able to respond and understand you.

Thats a SJ (Statens järnvägar, Swedish state railways) class E2 no, 909

A picture of a E2 in real life:

(Not my picture, just found it on the net.)

As previously stated Jeco has a model http://www.jeco.se/jeco/prodlist.asp?qsLang=eng&type=&id=902&code=902612

You can get the passenger coaches from the firm NMJ http://shop.nmj.no/index.php?cPath=351_352_418&osCsid=59342bb246a46a7ab6d580493e110e16

Mmm - not so bad pricewise either (for a small series of cars in high cost countries) - 445 kroner Norwegian (nmj.no is in Norway, jeco.se is in Sweden, both countries use “kr” as abbreviation for their currencies - kroner in Norway, kronor in Sweden).

About $75 per car.

Very good info here… I do remember reading about this particular engine and how they were saved by the Swedish government as a war stock, exactly for what you said, in case the diesel supplies ran low, or the electric grid was disrupted. They were kept in hidden sheds all across the country just waiting until the red armies came a marching across the continent. I will definitely take a look at all these links, and I will keep you all informed on how the search and purchase of one of these engines goes. Thanks for all the help.

It looks like you’re going to have to make the plow.
