Hey Folks,
I am brand new to this model train hobby. It all started last week when my wife asked me to get the trains out and put them around the Christmas tree. About 5 years ago I purchased an American Flyer 1957 vintage steam locomotive with a couple of passenger cars from my brother but have not got them out much because they did not work very well. I have now spent some time lubricating them and cleaning the track (funny how that works) and they run pretty good. My current problem is this… The train runs very good for awhile and then stops or starts going to max speed on its own. I suspect that it is a problem with the transformer because the handle looks a bit corroded and the connection seems to break when I adjust the handle (It is a lever that disconnects or sits down in the locked position). So I was wondering: How do I get the transformer evaluated and repaired? (My local train shop is not much help on the American Flyer stuff). I tried to clean up the handle with a green scrubby and that worked pretty well on the handle but it did not help the end result much.
Also, can anyone recommend good books or other sources to get smart about my set-up. I have an owner’s manual but it does not give much detail.
One last thing… What would be a nice add on train system if my boys start getting into this? Maybe something with a bit less maintenance and expense.
Thanks!
