I found a film of my grandfather and father at Christmas (pre 1950). There was a Lionel set under the tree. The images are blurry and I can’t make out the set. It was a steam engine with a square type tender, an orange boxcar with brown doors, an SP type caboose, a 2461 transformer car and either a crane or a gindola car. I have the original 2461 and I want to duplicate the set. I looked in Greenbergs and can’t find a set with these items.
The orange box car was most likely a Baby Ruth car. What is the wheel configuration of the locomotive?
I have a similar set from 1949. I will check what the '49 catalog says the set is. Mine has the 2020 engine with the SP caboose, erie crane, transformer car, etc.

Thanks for the replies. The film is so blurry, I can’t even tell the wheel arrangement. There was a view from the front and the headlight is on top of the boiler like a 2020, not in the center.
Hello elvisp! Sounds like your Train could have had a # 675 steam engine also as they had a headlight on top & another possibility is that this set could have been put together from seperate sale items of the time period described here especially since you cannot find any reference to it yet in Greenbergs Guide.Does your Father remember how this set came about or where it was purchased? Other possibilities include the fact that this train could have come from a Hardware, Auto Supply store, Dept Store, Or a S&H Green Stamp special. Keep this in mind as Lionel had many accounts back in those days. Take Care.
Scan and post the picture if you can, and we should be able to ID it for you.
Havent forgotten you, just need to deal with some crumbsnatchers this morning. I hope to look for the '49 guide soon.

OK, finally was able to dig out the '49 catalog. I am not sure it is much help as it sounds like your Dad had a add on car and not sure which one. The 1447WS set has a 2020 engine, 6020W tender, 6461 transformer car, 3461 lumber car, 2460 crane, 6419 caboose. But no boxcar. Your boxcar could be a 3464 operating boxcar in either ATSF or NYC which are orange with a black/brown door.
Now the electronic control set has a 671 engine with orange car and coal dump, sp caboose and gondola, it is listed as set 4110WS.
I just re-read your original post. Since your transformer car is a 2461 and not a 6461, perhaps it is a set from 47-48. I suspect most of the cars are about the same and the sets changed little.

thanks for all of the replies. I must have looked at the video 50-60x. It is so blurry, I can only make out shadows of color. I think the engine is a 675 as I think there are 3 drivers on each side. I don’t think they are small like that of a turbine.
What I thought was a crane now appears to be a gondola with tinsel hanging from the tree giving the effect of a crane boom.
