Think of it from the engineer’s point of view in the cab. If you were approaching a switch that was set against you, what colour would you like to see? [:D]
It’s similar to a stop light on the highway. Green means the switch is aligned for the main which, usually, is a good thing. Red means the switch is aligned for the diverging route either left or right.
There is a switch stand here in Brampton that has a purple target. It’s located on a siding that curves away from the main line. I don’t knoe what it means, or if there’s a different colour on the other side.
A purple target? I’ve never seen one of those.
