Hi ~ I have a number of lionel train cars that I need help identifying… Does anyone know of a really good website that would be able to help? For example, I have a locomotive that is numbered 1061 but I’ve been unable to find info on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks ~ Megan
Is this the set?
An oft-recommended website is www.postwarlionel.com , but I didn’t see the 1061 listed there. OTOH, people on this website usually can help.
The 1061 locomotive was an 0-4-0 steamer offered in 1963-64, and a 2-4-2 steamer offered in 1969. It was classified as a “Scout” locomotive, one that was used in inexpensive starter sets 11420 (loco, tender, gondola, caboose), and 11710 (loco, tender, gondola, flatcar w/reels, caboose).
If you supply the numbers and descriptions for the other cars, we probably can identify them.
Megan, to identify Lionel trains I would buy the Greeberg’s pocket size price guide and look up each item under the differant headings. Pre-war trains were usually made from metal or tin and called tin plate, there is no number system for pre-war or post-war trains as they all used the same four number ID system until the 80’s or 90’ and then switched over to five digit numbers. Hope this helps you some!

Hello Megan ! I would be willing to guess that your #1061 has a #6042 black or blue gondola, #6167 red caboose, and possibly a Blue # 6502 Flatcar with a girder on it.? This was one of the more common variations of this paricular train. Hope this helps.
The set that user : stevend has posted can not be accurate, I am into post-war and pre-war Lionel and the photo shows a post-war engine & tender with pre-war freight cars as I have the green gondola # 2653 in my collection. Also no information in Greenberg’sprice guide on a 1061, if you want an estimate as to what the trains are worth I will try but I must have all numbers for every car in the set!
