Help selecting 1970's era track MOW equipment

I’d like to pick up some HO scale MOW track equipment for my railroad. I already have a custom finishing burro crane, but I’d like to pick up a few other pieces. What would be the minimum number of track MOW equipment that I need for the 1970’s that would replace ties? I’ve taking pictures of some UP equipment that has been working in my area. I know one is a ballast regulator which I think I’ll get, but what is the other thing?

There are bundles of new ties along the track. I don’t think either one of these installs the ties. What would? Were ties bundled and installed like they are now in the 1970’s? I haven’t seen any other MOW equipment around. Is there a model of ATS9115 or similar produced? What does ATS9115 do?

Thanks,

Nate

http://www.walthers.com/exec/search?quick=Bachmann+MOW This link will get you to the Walthers Bachmann MOW vehicles. The ballast regulator, tamper, and speeder look pretty good, but are not the best runners as they are quite small. 2 of them are on sale for $44.95 (reg $64). The UP units may be a bit modern for the 70’s. Good Luck![8D]

MOST MOW equipment were rebuilds of retired, or much older cars - like wood sided box cars into ??? - tool cars, kitchen cars, bunk type sleeping, etc. Some even kept their arch bar trucks.

Flat cars with rail or freshly creosoted (oily black) ties would have been appropriate. 0nly an occasional Derrick or flat car with bull-dozers, would be included.

MOW trains sat on the nearest siding to allow ‘payload’ traffic to pass, while workers did their assignments further on.

WALTHERS has bought up previous company’s molds, such as former True scale cars, and has offered them in two separate sets. Athearn ‘Pullman’ type sleepers (painted aluminum) could be included in this mix.

Cars operating on the Mojave desert were often painted Aluminum, to ward off the daytime heat.

In short: Discontinued, older equipment to provide tools/food /shelter and maintenance for the railroad.
