Here's Another Repaint For Everyone's Enjoyment!

As you might guess I’ve gotten on a roll with repaints! Here’s the story on this one…

I’ve wanted a Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac steam locomotive for quite some time. I live in the area after all!
Anyway, RF&P steamers are few and far between around here, they disappear quickly from dealer’s shelves and if and when they DO show up they’re pricey. So, it was time to “Roll my own.”
I started with a Post-War 2046. You know, I like the Lionel 2046 / 2056 engines both for their brawny good looks and pulling ability. It looked like this, and be advised this won’t be the last time I use this 2046 shot as the “before” in “before and after” posts. Sometimes I neglect a “before” shot.

And here’s the “after” once I converted the Hudson to a Pacific and did the repaint.

Research on this was frustrating. I couldn’t find any steam era RF&P heralds to download for decals so I settled on a 1920’s dual-purpose RF&P engine scheme. Virtually all of RF&P’s Pacifics were dual-purpose passenger and freight engines.
As a rule with the RF&P the colors were:
Graphited smokebox, grey boiler jacket, black for the cab, running boards and everything under the running boards, “gold” lettering and striping, polished and oiled rods.
So, what do you think? My fellow VTCA members were very impressed!

Thanks! And welcome back!

WOW that is impressive nice job !!

Thanks!

Really impressive work! I’ve done a repaint here and there for some of my American Flyer trains and HO trains, but nothing as professional as yours. I do rebuilds and repairs on vintage Flyer trains but don’t have the expertise or resources to do full cosmetic restorations. One future project I hope to do for myself though is rebuild a Flyer #310-series K5 Pacific and paint it in accurate Pennsy colors.

Oh my, thank you for the kind words!
Oh, and the repainting’s not as tough as you think. Get some good quality masking tape and paints (I like Tamiya) and give it a go!

I agree, Tamiya paint is really good

Absolutely. I was a Testor’s user for years and considered it the gold standard but I started using Tamiya when Testor’s paints became unavailable. I swear by Tamiya now!

Do you use brush or air brush?

I used spray cans. If I was going to, say, make a business out of repaints I’d get a good quality airbrush system but for what I’m doing spray cans are more than adequate. I’m happy with the results.
