Norfolk Southern is discovering what Union Pacific originally found, that Heritage units are a great way to reach out to fans, employees and average joes alike. Grandpa can tell his grandkids how he worked on the Pennsy or NYC and the kids can see how his work is being honored. Great moves by two great transportation companies!
I am delighted by the beauty of some of these units. The Erie one turned out to be quite cool as did the Nickel Plate.
Even though it was firecracker hot on the 4th, the event was worth being in the heat for. The paint schemes were beautiful and being that close to all those units made you forget how hot it was. My wife had never seen a dome car except in pictures and the full length dome Amtrak had displayed there gave her a great perspective. Many thanks to the NC Transportation Museum staff, NS and all the volunteers who made this a wonderful and memorable experience.
I truly envy each and every person who had the opportunity to attend the event. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that there will be an HO and/or O gauge manufacturer who will produce a series of the 20 locomotives.
