Does anyone know of a source for information on the history of RR crossing signs? Over the years, there have been many designs and I’d like to know which ones are appropriate for my RR’s era, 1958. If region makes a difference, my RR goes through south-central Missouri.
Not sure if this is of any help, but Blair Line makes signs in HO scale and they have a page of “vintage” signs. The prototype photo they display on their website shows an early style of railroad crossing sign:
But I think it might be a little dated for 1958. By then many of the now standard designs still in use today were in place…at least based on some research I’ve done over the years for our 1957 era layout.
Not railroad crossings, but still an invaluable website is this one I came upon just a few days ago. It has highway signs for many different eras and states. Incredible info:
First off, what prototype are you modeling? A number of fallen flags have historical societies and they can be a good resource for that sort of information.
Next would be prototype resources like books, magazines, and VHS/DVDs. Morning Sun books has some great books. Unfortunately, they come at a price - i.e. $50-$60 a pop.
Libraries are still yet another resource for your inquiries. Also, check out the fallenflags.org web site.
That’s just a few of the items and places where you might find your answers. Hope that helps…
You’re going in the right direction. Prior to standardization achieved through linking federal highway funds to implementation of national standards for signage and other road markings, there was considerable regional and even railroad-specific signage.
Road crossing markings were originally developed by individual railroads to address liability issues, which varied according to state law, which accounts for the wide variation in form and language on the crossing sign itself.
If you’re modeling a specific prototype, as recommended above check with the historical society. If you’re freelancing, check what other RRs in the state or nearby used as a good basis for your signs.
