hmm...

chicago to new york via kentucky?!

maybe someone could explain that one to me so i don’t have to look up the ‘cardinal’ schedule on amtrak.com.

You can’t go from Chicago to New York without passing through KY and Robert Byrd’s Scenic West Virginia.

From New York you go to Washington. Thereafter, a map of the good ol’ C&O will explain all (at least until you get out of Kentucky!).

Cardinal- Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, south side of the Ohio River to Huntington WV, Charleston WV, VA stops, Washington, DC then NEC to New York.
When equiped with SuperLiners, the train terminated in Washington. When the SuperLiners were assigned to other trains the Cardinal got Amfleet cars. New York Sunnyside Yard has the service facilities for the Amfleet cars so the train was then run through to New York.

lol…i saw that and it didn’t make much sense to me, my bad. thanks for the replies.

Oh, and Farmer–please don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! The scenery is anything but “water level”. The New River Gorge–heck, the entire route through West Virginia–has some fantastic scenery. Even after being up in Capitol country last year, I still think this has the best.
