HO Layout Photos

I took some photos of the town section of my HO layout and thought it would be nice to share. I posted photos of the desert section earlier and they can be found here.

Motel and pool: Market: Gas station, White Castle burger joint, icing facility and depot: Close up of White Castle: Movie theatre: Downtown: Fire station and other businesses: Interlocking tower: Business car in for servicing: Grilling up some dinner: The Pope came to visit: Overhead Views:

That’s a nice layout you have alot of finer details in it, Your work is pretty cool and the night scene in the town was cool. How about more photo’s of your trains to share :). BTW the pool would be nice rate about now in this hot weather.

Very nice layout. I especially like how the background blends in so well with the foreground. Check out the Aerial View thread and post some overall aerial views of the layout there so we can get an idea of the track plan and the way you put everything together.

Wow! That is simply amazing!

Outstanding!!!
Just Outstanding. I love the fine details. seems that you have a little story going for each of your setups. The Pope blessing chickens on this trip?

Thanks all.

“Pope blessing chickens” [(-D] They’re supposed to be doves, or even swallows. I guess they are a bit out of scale [:I] My sister says it looks like the Pope is feeding pigeons.

Below are 2 more photos and I posted some aerial photos here

Meet in the desert

WOW![bow] I love the motel scene. IIRC that’s a fairly cheap kit. You made it look real nice! Love the campers and trailors too. Nice touch!

You have what we like to call in the industry a “clean” looking layout with limited weathering effects.

It looks very nice with clean lines.

I especially like the “trailer trash” scene. I was looking at purchasing an entire trailer park from walthers, but for $99 I could buy the real thing.

I noticed in old movies, photos etc… that in the mid to late 50’s towns throughout the southwest (especially on route 66) had similar looking motels. Many with turquoise trim and stucco paint. Since the layout is the Santa Fe railway in 1957 through the southwest, and the highway through town is supposed to be 66, I needed a motel.

But there really wasn’t anything that looked right in the HO kit market. Then I noticed the Bachmann HO motel. It comes as one story, but I started thinking using two kits could make a nice two story motel. It wasn’t an overnight project as it took some styrene work to make the normally sloped roofs flat, and railings and a custom built stairway were needed along with other details. But after painting and adding details I was so pleased with how this cheap kit turned out. And at night the “neon” signs add so much.

It’s hard to believe the motel started out as this

There is just one other detail I really really want to add by the pool, but unfortunately I have never been able to find it. Even after many years of searching. I like the looks of the N.J. International street light with a sort of 50s-60s looking dome. This light. I think it would look good as an outdoor light for the pool area. But I just can’t find one.

I thought I remembered that kit being a single story but I didn’t know who made it. What are you using for your sidewalks? It looks like you have a couple different styles.

very nice ! i’m sure i stayed at that motel once [:)]

seeing what you started with for the motel really makes me appreciate your modelling skills , that’s a great conversion

now you need to mess things up a bit , your ground color needs some variation and some random junk , it’s too perfect .

In the downtown area are Magnuson sidewalks. They sometimes came with Magnuson buildings (like the movie theatre). But they also sold separate sidewalk sets. Scale Structures apparently has reissued most of the old Magnuson line and also offers 2 sidewalk sets, so I guess these are the same sidewalks I have.

The sidewalks around the motel came with the Bachmann kits. I had to cut a few of the pieces so they would fit around the modifications I made to the building.

I much prefer the Magnuson sidewalks as they have realistic molded in details. I think the pieces are resin, and they take paint really well.
