ho scale up 0-6-0

I am new to the form and I would like to start by saying hello. i have been wondering where I can find an ho scale model of the union pacific 0-6-0 class that #4466 is a part of. I am aware any model i find will probly be a brass import, i am just wondering if a model of that specific class was made and if so where i can find one. any help would be appreciated.

First off welcome to the board, I believe your best bet is to do a Google search for the locomotive your seeking. Doing a quick search Bachmann makes and UP 0-6-0 but there seem to be several types of that wheel configuration.

Thats most likely a S-51 Class 0-6-0 switcher that won’t be found in plastic.

OMI produced several runs in brass in 1995 of these locomotives but they are in the $700-$800 range from what i can find…,quite expensive for an 0-6-0

thanks for your help. :slight_smile: I really dont want to do a kitbashing job, and brass is definatly an option. as long as it runs fine i would have no problem spending that much on one. could a loco like that be fitted with dcc easily? also where could i get the omi model?

Quite honestly, Allegheny, the resemblance between the Bachmann model and the real class S-51 0-6-0 is only quite superficial. Look carefully at the dome arrangement, cab windows, headlight placement, tender apprutenances, just to begin with, and you’ll see how distinctly different the two are. I’m afraid that in most instances when someone is seeking an exact replica of a particular steam engine, it’s unlikely to be found as a common plastic model, even these days. If the OP really wants an exact copy, he’ll have to go with brass on this one. [;)]

Pacific Fast Mail imported a United model of the UP’s 4400-series 0-6-0. If you can find one it will probably be priced a lot less than the Overland model. United engines are generally very good runners, although you may want to replace the original open-frame motor with a more modern can or coreless motor.

Check caboosehobbies.com in Denver, CO. They have an enormous selection of used consignment brass steamers. They have a brass PFM UP 0-6-0–asking price $295. Just click on “Brass” fill in the required fields (HO, Union Pacific, Brass: steam loco) and it will take you right to it.

I just checked Caboose Hobbies. They have a Pacific Fast Mail brass version of 4466 already painted and ready to go for $250. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

It looks nice except for the fact that it has the wrong tender. The 4466 had a slope backed tender, not a semi-vanderbilt. 295 is not a bad price though for a PFM. - Mike

Thanks for the leads guys! im kind of torn right now between the 2 models- I have no idea what the slopeback model looks like because there is no pic. but I really like the one with the vany tender, if only it had a slopeback tender! which one do you guys think I should get?

Tender assignments were not set in stone, UP and SP were fond of swaping all manner of tender styles among its switcher fleet. For the price i’d take it and run before someone else does.

Here is a link to a Southern Pacific 0-6-0 with a Vanderbilt tender. Quite possible UP did the same thing as they were also big into Vanderbilt tenders.

So it seems that an 0-6-0 brass is not that hard to find, the big question is do you want a ladder-back tender or a vanderbilt tender? the prices of brass do not seem that extravagant, decisions,decisions.
