hello my name is corey im 11 and i recently purchased a HO Bachman Santa Fe Super Cheif Freight Set and im wondering how do you install a sound chip?
If you visit the web page for Tony’s Trains, you can find articles on DCC installations in general and some hints for specific models. Digitrax web page is very helpful and many articles exist on most of the manufacturers of DCC products.
Ths instructions that come with most decoders are more than adequate to do the installation.
Good luck and take your time to get it correct.
Hi Corey,
The installation of sound into a locomotive requires some thought because in most cases it is not just a simple process.
First of all, sound decoders are really best if you have a DCC control system for your layout. The sound decoder is going to cost you anywhere from $60-$150. The installation requires the installation of the decoder electronics and a suitable speaker system with appropriate speaker enclosure. Often the most difficult part is finding the space to install the speaker. Depending on the model, the installtion may require soldering. Soundtraxx, Digitrax, MRC and ESU Loksound all make sound decoders. Check out their web sites for more information.
MRC also makes a box called the Soundstation. This comes with a pair of speakers and allows you to control layout sound, but it is not installed in the locomotive, so may not be what you are looking for.
[#ditto]I agree completely. And at that, putting the sound chip into the locomotive easier than installing the speaker. Not meaning to put down your enthusiasum but it is not a trivial thing to do. What grade in school is 11 years old - 6th? I believe I was soldering by that age, but I don’t know that is a normal skill at that age. Have you already mastered soldering small wires? (and I emphasis small). Have you already worked with ACC(superglue) and silicone type adhesives? Is a parent, uncle, or older sibling available to help? These things will determine if the task is possible or not.
This type of system is much more easy to install and operate. And probably cheaper too. My father has one of these on his N-scale layout.
