Having read the post about O’Hare, I realized that I was going to be in Madison on the 2nd and 3rd of July. Any good hobby shops out that way?
Nothing outstanding. There is a small shop in West Madison which had new owners in February. I believe it is called the Whistle Stop. Not a lot of anything, it is located inside a small strip mall near the West Town Mall. Address is in the phone book. Another shop on Odana Road has nothing, mainly RC planes and cars. Milwaukee is about an hour east on Interstate 94 if you have transport and time. Several decent shops there.
An hour south of Madison in Monroe WI ( on HWY69 just north of the IL border) there is one of the best stocked Hobby shops I’ve found in a while. It’s not huge on space but there are cars and engines from floor to ceiling. I still consider it my local shop even though I moved 90 miles away. Somehow my credit card and the UPS man always get me train stuff. Brian is the owner and quite an experienced N-scale modeller. I would give him a call 608-325-5107 before heading that way. He takes some vacations during the summer but his machine usually informs you ( I know he’s out this week) If you need the directions to make Monroe “on the way” I’ll give them to you. His inventory is well worth the trip.
you could probably e-mail him as well hobbydpo@tds.net
In the Summers he does not work on Sundays so try to make it Saturday
Madison has only one rail-oriented hobby shop – the Madison Train Stop in the Clock Tower Mall on Mineral Point Road (west side). It’s a new operation, not real large, but the inventory is decent and getting better week by week.
I second the comments about the shop in Monroe. Brian will be on vacation through June 20.
Both Monroe and the Madison Train Stop are good stores. My “Official” local hobby shot is the one in Madison, as it’s the closest one with a good selection to me. I’ve become a regular, and I know the owner personally. Take a stop at least. Here’s there website, it’s not much yet, but they’re building.
