Hobby Stores in Massachusetts

Hi All,

Anyone know of any hobby stores in Southeastern Massachusetts. I live in New Bedford and am building a N-scale layout.

Thanks,

Roger

Hi theres one in Leominster (Central Ma) called Shepaug RR. He has a lot of N plus will special order and good $$

And of coarse, there’s always Charles Ro in Malden. I live south of Boston and don’t frequent his store as in the past. One of the largest in inventory for all scales in this area.

If you want to look on the south shore, there’s Bill’s freindly on Rt 123 in Abington and The Platinum Spike in Cohasset villiage. Both of them carry a decent inventory of all the new releases.

Roger,
The best hobby shop that I know of in your area is AA Hobbies in Warwick, RI right near T.F. Green Airport…which should say something about how many shops there are on the South Coast. As in, there isn’t much out there. Recently, two Southeastern MA LHS’s have closed that were good: East Bay Hobbies in Seekonk (out of business) and Ed’s Boxcar in Raynham (moved to FL).

I don’t recall that AA Hobbies had much in N scale, but at least you can order from him. John, the owner, is a good guy, very knowledgeable, and a darn good modeler to boot.

Bill’s Friendly Train Shop in Randolph had to move into his house, so I’ve heard (that’s the one in Abington). Bill can be…interesting…to say the least. Let me put it this way, whenever I’ve seen him, he’s always chomping on an unlit cigar.

About the only other one around Southeastern MA is Trackside Sales in Attleboro. Friendly staff, specializes in DCC/sound installations, just happens to be in downtown Attleboro next to a pawn shop (but you can watch Amtrak roar by). Mostly modern HO stuff and some N.

Other than that, for stuff near New Bedford, you’re out of luck…I think.

However, there are two train shows in the area coming up. Brockton has a train show at Temple Beth Emunah this Sunday 10-4pm, and in January is the Fall River show at Durfee High School.

Weather Or No Go New Haven

It’s a bit of a trip, but Maine Trains in Chelmsford, Mass, is a great place. His in-store selection is mostly HO with some amount of N. Check the store’s web page at www.mainetrains.com for a look at the in-store layout and other stuff. (No, I don’t work there, and have no financial interest in the shop, but the more successful his business is, the better he’ll take care of us regulars.)

To those of you in places like Texas or Montana, “a bit of a trip” up here means anything over 20 miles. Still, given the traffic and the roads, even that might take you an hour or more. The ride up from New Bedford to Chelmsford would be about an hour and a half, I’d guess.
