Home made PVC Train Whistles

Has any one here ever made a train whistle out of PVC pipe? I ordered the plans to build them and was wondering if anybody else here has done this and what were your results?

I’ll bet that would take quite a bit of air… I have a moderate sized compressor and it can only maintain about 30psi.

True. I do have a compressor that will get the job done.

I haven’t, but now I want to.

Here’s some information you might find interesting, on how this kind of whistle works:

Neat stuff.

Something tells me that the “neighbors will love you” statement should be a real warning.

Although I’d have to admit, I would really like to hear it. Too bad a sound file was not added to the listing.

Give me a month or so and I will have a sound bite.

AHH! Very interesting and easy to understand.

I can’t wait!! (said with evil grin, followed by evil laugh, looking out my window at my neighbor)

pvc is a toxic chemical. it is used for waste piping and is not recommended for use with drinking water. so why would you want to put a piece of it in your mouth? when i work with pvc pipe the warnings say you should wash your hands after handling it or before eating any food. maybe in the future when you have a child or a grandchild born with two heads or six fingers and toes on each hand or foot you’ll look back and say it was a bad idea.

Ahh, yes… its the toxic police.

Maybe if you fully read this thread and looked into the links on this page you’d see that an AIR COMPRESSOR is needed.

I have handled PVC my whole career and I have never seen or heard of this warning.

EDIT:

Anything you buy wrapped in plastic (including meat and other food products) with the “Triangle 3” on the wrapper is packed in Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC).

At the N Scale club we have a member that been a plumber for 43 years.Maybe that explains why he’s all thumbs.[:O][:-,]

BTW…PCV pipes is used for water lines…

Hm … lots of trailers around here are plumbed with it as are some “manufactured” homes. The borg stores and my plumbing supply house both sell it in DW sizes. How toxic can it be? I don’t think I’d worry about a compressor fed whistle at all except for hearing damage.

It does give off deadly fumes when burned though. We once responded to a structure fire behind a waterheater plumbed with PVC (discarded cigarette). The pipe melted and extinguished the fire, but not before the fumes killed two dogs. Only 18" of the pipe actually melted.

Personally, I replaced the 100 plus year old iron piping in my home with copper. Used PVC only for a few sink drains and spud cannons.

Says who???[%-)]PVC is the standard for drinking water these days. Care to share any top secret reports you might have with us??

Why don’t you just buy the real thing and put it in your car?[:-^]

Nonsense. Not even the phthalate panicmongers claim that rigid, nonplasticized PVC has any harmful properties. It’s nontoxic. Nobody is going to be born with two heads. There will be no Six-Fingered Man to harass the Spaniards.

The warning is boilerplate. PVC pipe is nontoxic.

The stress that this sort of uninformed fearmongering causes is far more harmful than PVC pipe, because PVC pipe isn’t harmful at all. The danger that this fearmongering will lead foolish governments to ban useful plastics that save lives and property by making sanitary, durable, rustproof piping and electrical insulation easier is very real. Don’t add to it!

If PVC is so toxic, why do all of the major home builders plumb new houses with PVC water pipe and the home improvement and hardware stores sell PVC water pipe to the public without any EPA warning labels on it?
