I shot these pics about 35 years ago. I’d like to kitbash a boxcar into one, but I’m not 100% sure about some things. Has anybody else ever seen these cars? Are the dump doors hinged in the middle (as I guess), with chain ratchets on BOTH sides?
I wish I could offer specific information, but I’m just a curious. I’ve seen pics of similar cars (often 50’) on I think Guilford, or maybe the MEC. The ones I remember seemed to be unloaded through the orrigonal side doors.
Would it be possible to model these by simply removing the roof from an appropriate box car (with a load to hide the interior)? Were there other common modifications besides the roofs?
Where did you shoot these pictures?
If I read the photo correctly, it appears to be bottom dumped, note the chains and ratchet mechanisims about a third of the way up the side.
These were 40’ boxcars, the doors were removed and replaced with sheet steel; roofs removed and sides extended about 2’; slope sheets added inside (some of my pictures you can see where it was welded to the sides); brake cylinder, valve, and reservoir moved inside, under the slope sheet; large rectangular hole cut in the end to access brake equipment.
I think the dump doors extended all the way across the bottom, and were operated in pairs by the chain ratchets.
Pictures were taken in Columbia, SC, around 1970.
