Hornby Class 50 (31) as good as an Atlas or Kato?

Hi,

Does anyone have one of the OO Hornby class 50 or 31 diesels? Are they as good as an Atlas or Kato loco, smooth running, detail etc?

Here in the UK, Hornby, one of the major model manufacturers, always seemed to lag behind the likes of Kato and Atlas for quality, but now they have released some new models that I think are better quality and more like the US model standards of Kato and Atlas. They are even branching out into the DCC market.

Does anyone have any experience of the new Hornby locos compared to the US stuff.

Thanks

Paul, I don’t have a class 50 or 31 but did pick up one of the new Hornby range a class 08 and I have to say that the detail and the quality of the loco is far superior to anything I have seen from Hornby before. I am far from a Hornby expert, so they may have been making things like this for a while. I would say that is compares favorably to the latest Atlas models that I have. I do not have any recent Kato.

I’ve got a 50 and it is a very good model, Detail is very fine and it runs very smoothly and quietly. They are basically the same quality as proto 2000, with opening cab doors and a working fan on both the 50 and 31. The only criticisim I have is the lights are too bright compared to the real thing, so fitting a resistor or decoder with the ability to reduce the voltage to the lights improves the realisim.
They make a cracking display model if you fit all the bufferbeam details.
I’ve got Kato, Atlas and Proto and I’d also recommend any of the new tooling Hornby, go to a decent model shop and have a look and see it run. You will like what you see.
