That and an eBay auction are all I’ve seen so far. Hornby said they were supposed to come out in the first quarter of this year, but it seems they’re half a year late. At least the new Big Boy looks pretty nice.[:D]
msowsun, you have to cut the middle wheels in half and put another pair of cylinders between them.[:D]
The Hornby news has been around for some time and now the new MR shows the Big Boy that is available. They probably are not advertising as much as they would have since they are a distant third with their latest edition of the Big Boy to the Genesis and PCM models. The picture shows the model numbered 4024, which the prototype was delivered new without the cooling fins on the the deck and makes this model incorrect. Add up the lack of brake shoes, small sized drivers and very poor detail, and you have a model that was state of the art in 1980.
I still have three of these from the AHM era and the small flanges and better motor is about the only visual upgrade I can see. Lets hope they release better upgrades to some of the previous Rivarossi products.
The one bright spot is the C&O 2-6-6-6. It is a class act.
Reply is slightly OT. Well it could get even more confusing if they build them in china. Although Hornby is here in the UK alot of production these days is done in China. So let me get this straight we have to translate from Italian to English then in to Chinese back in to English then finally in to American English. If you want to hear someone speak funny then listen to my wife she’s from the US and lived over here for 7 years she speaks with a twang and uses both American and British words, sometimes when she speaks to family back home it can be quite amusing. They do say we are 2 nations divided by a common language.
The older upgraded Big Boys got the new motor, new drivetrain & gear towers, diecast engine frames giving better stability (as opposed to the old stamped blackened steel), and some sprung drivers. They were also smart to finally put the traction tires on the gear driven main axle. But the ante has been upped by the release of the Genesis. Hornby claims there are further improvements under the hood, but give no specifics. They will have to make it worthwhile pricewise.
