I work in HO scale, but I also love N scale. As I would like to take a layout with me where ever I go, I need info on building a layout in a brief case or a violin case.
I am going to the Grand Canyon this Summer, so I would like to have it done by then. I have purchsed track, 2 sets, and some more cars. ( I can set up a big floor layout with that stuff)
I basically want it to have a grade, a turntable, and permanent buildings, How can this work?
A decent size briefcase would be a start, preferably hard on the outside. Alternatively a small suitcase may be more useful. All buildings would need to be glued down, a turntable inside, plus a grade (presumably you mean an incline) would require some work. Added to this you need to be able to shut the case without crushing anything!
If N scale is too big for a briefcase you could try the same trick with Z scale - I’ve seen the Z scale breifcase layout at a model show before, I just don’t know how they did it.
Marklin have offered a solar-powered Z-scale briefcase layout as a pre-built set - very expensive but also highly desirable! I’d say for N you would need a suitcase rather than a briefcase - there would not be enough room in most briefcases for the radius of curves you’d need for reliable operation. The ideal would probably be one of those “hardbody” Samsonite-type suitcases as this will give you a solid base to attach your roadbed, etc to and will also protect the contents well. Hope this is of some help!
That’s a really useful website, thanks for mentioning it! I think my next extension board might well look something like the first “Dense track” plan as I currently have two lines approaching the edge of the board that could easily link into the right hand side of this plan, and would add the extra length onto my lead track and siding that I’m mainly building the extension for. Thanks again for the link!
I think instead of building a whole laout, I will build a modalr stye layuot to put in the case so I can have a good sized layout without the case restrictions.
I plan to make the buildings removable and have flat sceanery without all those trees to stop me.
