Not many HO intermodal cars can accept 53’ trailers. The most popular Athearn spine cars can only take 48-footers. Noone makes longer spine cars in HO. Yet there are plenty of 53’ trailers than need to be moved somehow.
So share your setup - what cars do you use to move them?
Walthers used to make the “Long Runner” version of their 89’ intermodal flat car…two drawbarred flats capable of carrying three 53’ trailers. Check eBay and the swap meets.
You could use this car http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/932-4302 and utilize the 5th wheel at the end of the well. Or, if you’re lucky enough to find Walthers part #932-4960, you’d have a pair of 89’ flat cars attached by drawbar that are set up to carry 3 57’ trailers.
Are you talking abotu Piggy BAcks? If you are then you take a standard Falt car and put the trailer on one half and the truck on the flat bed in front of it.
No guys. Your misunderstanding me. I mean Keeping the Tractor and trailer together. Like they did in the very begging of piggybacks. They would put the tractor parcially on one flat bed, and the trailer on the other 3/4 of the flat car behind it, while the tractor and traler are still attached.
You know, UPChuck, proper drugs and a little therapy will help that flat car.[;)]
And, no, that’s no prototypical, unless he’s talking about the single well cars. They use the drawbared 86’s, or put a single one on older, shorter flats. They also got well cars that can handle single 53’ trailers. Most companies (JB Hunt/Snchieder/ Knights Transport) are going to containers. They can always be top-stacked if equiptment to handle 53’s aren’t available.
WC, I was talking to you. I’ve seen a picture of that before, too, somewhere. I don’t think that idea lasted to long. The only way to do it is with a circus ramp. nobodies gonna go back to that.
unionpacificchuck, are your talking about this? If it came across as yelling and correcting I apologize. The first bit was a joke, a very old one about flat cars being depressed.
The rest was answering the questions they posed. And I don’t see what age has to do with anything. I don’t see where the mistake your refering to is. WC is right, I’ve seen pictures of it too. And how is asking if deperessed flats to haul cofc/tofc prototypical a mistake? And how is answering that yelling? I’m confussed.
Not sure they do it that way anymore. I may be wrong but I haven’t seen, in person or photo, tractor and trailer hauled piggyback while they are still connected in the modern, 53 ft era.
