How many NON-TRAIN personal does Amtrak have? and there total payroll!

I heard they have like 1000 Lawyers!

Total Amtrak employees is approx. 19,400, down almost 6,000 from 2 years ago. Pres. Gunn had eliminated many Vice Presidents during this process. Aside from on-board employees, mainly you have: Track Dept., Signals Dept. (C&S), Bridges & Buildings (B&B), Electric Traction in the electrified portion of Amtrak, electricians, mechanics for the engines and rail cars, ticket agents in Station Services, Amtrak Police Dept, and some other business units I’m sure.

I assumed the total was fourteen.

You can find those details on the monthly reports prepared by Amtrak which are on their web site. Click on Media and then Other Reports.

They have 127 in the Gen. Counsel dept - not all of whom are lawyers.

I believe the old wisdom is to believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see…

I suspect that you will find a similar proportion of just about every discipline in just about every company of any size. They all have legal, financial, PR, etc, etc, to take care of. None of those people contributes to the bottom line, yet they are all essential.

Consider, too, that especially in the case of lawyers, they are often “on retainer.” Not actually working for the company, yet they are.

If you don’t have all the M/W and mechanical folks, the trains won’t run with any efficiency, John Q. Public will ride in filthy cars and your 90-110mph track will be down to 60 MPH in a heartbeat.
