i have about 20 trains, i have just got started. do you have any tips?[8D][8D][:)][:D][^]
i have 11. engines if thats what you mean.
It sounds like someone doesn’t know the difference between a train and a car.
How many trains? well that depends how Im running the layout.
It also sounds like someone doesn’t know a certain fella named SpaceMouse who is going to blow his stack when he sees that the word “other” wasn’t included as a choice in the poll…
As for the poll question. I’ve got about 20 locos in both steam and diesel and over 100 cars of various types also in both steam and diesel era.

How many engines? 23. How many cars? No clue. How many trains right now? 3.
First, a couple of definitions:
- Train (prototype) A locomotive, with or without cars, showing markers. An 0-4-0T can be considered to be a train if it is operating on the main line by timetable, train order or track warrant.
- Train set (toy/hobby). The stuff that comes in a box marked ‘train set,’ usually a locomotive, a couple of cars and a caboose (plus track of sorts and a minimal train controller/power pack.)
- Train Set (prototype). The cars that make up a single consist, either passenger or freight. A unit coal train without locomotives is a ‘train set.’ So were the standard consists of the Century, the Broadway Limited, the California Zephyr or the Super Chief. (Note that it took two or more ‘train sets’ to operate the scheduled name trains listed.)
- Train (as modeled on the Nichigeki Route of the JNR). A schedule slot, listed on the timetable, in which a train is supposed to be operated. This is what there are about 145 of in a given operating ‘day’ of 24 timetable hours. 41 of them are operated by only five EMU cars, assembled as two sets and a kicker. 14 more are operated by a single set of five DMU cars (two of which carry a sixth car, a diner without its own diesel engines.) Other passenger trains are made up to fixed consists from a pool of cars, and assigned appropriate locomotives. Freight trains are, for the most part, made up of loose cars with a locomotive on one end and a brake van on the other. Exactly which cars is determined by my card system, and which locomotive is determined by what’s on the roundhouse lead and/or the motor storage tracks. (For those who are wondering, this astounding traffic density is entirely prototypical, which is why Japan in 1964 was a train watcher’s paradise.)
As you can see, the original question is open to considerable interpretation.
