One thing I noticed is that many green railroads use crushed gravel as the base, which is what I also use. I have also been very successful with my plants growing right in the gravel . In fact many of the plants come back earlier n the spring because the stone warms up faster than garden soil. So when I plant things, I make sure I dig down far enough and put in a healthy amount of soil and COMPOST, and the plant the plants finishing off with the stone on top.
