How To Indent Paragraphs?

Sorry to post this here. Maybe I missed the answer looking through the new format threads, but all of my recent posts have no indented paragraphs which makes for labor intensive reading for you all. The original post in (this) the compose box is indented but it gets posted in a thread as one block. Thanks.

Manually indent the first line with a space. Works every time I use it.

Like I did with the above line.

The convention of indenting paragraphs has fallen largely by the way over the past 12-15 years. Increasingly, it seems that a mere double-space suffices to signify that a new approach, thought, or contributing factor to a larger argument is being presented.

As I have demonstrated just now, double tapping on the “enter” key is all that it takes for me to go on to a new paragraph. It came as a surpise when the previous poster pointed to the function for an indent because I have no need of it, and had not thought to seek it.

In the big scheme of things, does it really matter that much if your paragraph isn’t indented? We’re not here to read a thesis, but to exchange ideas and thoughts relating to our common hobby.

I usually use a ‘Hard Return’ to start a new paragraph (like this one) to help the reader understand and follow the conversation. Reading your threads has never been a problem; you are usually very succinct and comprehensive in your writing.

The only problem I have with paragraphs is the email subsciption messages. All semblance to paragraphs disappears there. The entire message is shown as just one huge paragraph…

It indents the whole paragraph. So, it isn’t a good method for separating paragraphs. Be a good boy and hit the “enter” button once to separate your paragraphs.

Indenting a paragraph ? ? I’m still trying to figure out the spelling of some form members, I’m sure (I hope) that some of them are humorous, maybe not. Nice to see people actually communicating properly.

Don, Thanks for your very nice compliment regarding my writing. I try especially hard when asking particularly dumb questions :wink: I personally find it “eye boggling” trying to read long technical descriptions without indents. It’s really very tiring, especially for a wall eyed 56 yr. old. I have resorted to the double space separation method on occasion and I’m not enough of a grammatical/usage policeman to care whether or not it’s a genuine paragraph indent or a “faux” one but SOME separation/space between thoughts, ideas, etc. just seems…considerate for my reader(s), I guess. Crandell, I’m going to try the hit return twice method here and see what results… I just thought it weird that when I indented with the space bar and the original message appears indented that it becomes one paragraph once posted in a thread. I’ve only noticed this “bug?” since the forum’s format change. Apparently so have others? Oh well. Glad it’s not a hassle to read through my posts, anyway. I’ve got the same problem–see my comments on the A-line cardboard box topic. Everything gets crammed up into a big blob of words. That is definitely not OK, forum owners. Ed

I’m glad a few people here appreciate humor, although my attempts don’t always work. At my age, it’s one of the things that keeps me going. If you notice, Mr. B., among others, has a great sense of humor.

It gets worse! I listen to CBC’s “Ideas” on Radio One at 2100 hrs each weekday evening…a most informative, provocative, and illuminating hour-long programme. Last night, the person interviewed Roger Penrose and Julian Barbour, two brilliant and important physicists from Oxford, as well as philosopher David Deutsch. The title of the evening is “Living on Oxford Time”.
