How to remove real rust?

Some of my rolling stock and truck trailers have real rust stains from sitting in tubs that got water in them. Any one have any clue what I can use to clean them with out hurting the paint or plastic?

I would experiment with a product called “Pink Solution”. It removes stains of all sorts (including rust) from RVs and boats and is quite gentle on anything else.

Another rust removing solution that is pink, is Navel Jelly. Which is really jellied Phosphoric acid H3PO4.

I have no idea how it will react to paint or plastic. Depends on the paint and plastic. Works great on painted bicycles. What I don’t understand is how is plastic rusting? Are there metal detail parts that are rusting? Or plastic parts on a metal model? Can they be removed?

Anyway I would try a tiny bit of Navel Jelly on a rag in an inconspicuous part of the model and just see what it does or doesn’t do.

Do you have rusty parts or plastic parts with rust from the tub on them. If the latter, I would think a mild dishwashing liquid like Dawn should get it off. Here again experiment on the least valuable item to see how it works.

Good luck,

Richard

Oxalic Acid is used to remove rust stains from many surfaces and it is very effective. Try in an inconspicuous area first and rinse well after use. Follow label directions for use and handling.

I believe a product called Iron Out is similar.

Barkeeper’s Friend contains Oxalic Acid, but may also contain an abrasive.

Really? You have rust on your reel? Real rust on a reel, a really rusty reel.

Everybody else it trying to weather their stuff, and you want ot unweather it.

Oh well, what does a LION know! LIONS do not rust. (They do not live in Hamburg.)

If you are referring to stains on plastic surfaces, it is not rust per se, rather it is a water discoloration stain with rust particles which have adhered to the plastic (or paint). Surface cleaners should be sufficient, but anything stonger than a mild detergent-type solution will attack the existing paint. You might try 70% alcohol on a cotton swab (test on an inconspicuous location first). Stay away from Naval Jelly- way too strong and acidic. Start with Dawn dish detergent, then try some of the “green” cleaners which are citrus-based, but not any of the heavier “5-in-one” type cleaners. Cedarwoodron

If it is surface rust try sanding it.

I find this an interesting topic since most modelers want to know how to make “fake rust” on their models, not remove real rust.

Also try lime away and/or clr. Wd40 may work too.

No kidding.

I would just have just thought the Ghost of my Dad had been doing a little weathering and said “lookin good Dad”.[angel]

WD-40 works well, it also helps prevent rust, and helps loosen things up. My dad thinks you can’t put too much of it on things, and our tools don’t rust, just do it outside.

Kyle,

Probably, would not be a bad idea to re read the OP post, sanding, will damage the plastic, that the rust stain,is on.[:)]
