How to video topics?

Since I produce how-to videos – see my Siskiyou Line video series, which is essentially a detailed “from Dream to Reality” series on doing a layout – I can produce a how-to on just about any topic.

So here’s your chance. If something comes out especially popular, then I’ll consider doing a video on it, so you just might get your wish!

And if you don’t see your burning how-to topic listed above, then post it in a message here.

I voted for Prototypical Operation, but I would also like to see weathering for steam and diesel, rolling stock weathering, and Basic DCC. Can’t wait to see what the next video will be!

Joe,
I want to see a “how to” video on how to get the money to build a layout
like yours![:-^] Not to mention the space and the time.

But seriously, scenery is one of my favorite aspects of model railroading.
Keep up the good work. Dave

I voted for Basic scenery (plaster, rock molds, etc) because this is something I need to learn right now. And I know that Joe is very good at this.

Hmmm … 45 views and only 6 votes so far.

Is everybody just a bunch of lookey lous, or is it that no one thinks how to videos are a useful idea?

Joe:

There is nothing that beats how to videos. I’m so happy that you are on this forum, a big thank you for all your amazing knowledge. Come on guys, vote.

Can I vote all of the above? The videos will be an excellent learning tool. I voted, as I imagine most will, for what is applicable to me right now. But I really would *** to see all of 'em[:D]

JnM Lines:

I think you are right about that. I voted because I need to learn basic scenery right now. But I’m very interested in everything else as well.

Joe–I’d go for the steam detailing and weathering. Since I’m DC and not DCC, the operations videos wouldn’t do me much good, but anything on making my locos look used (but not rolling junk-heaps, LOL) would be appreciated. And yes, I’d be there, checkbook in hand if you came out with one.
Your layout just impresses the beJesus out of me, BTW!
Oh, and thanks very much for the hints on photography that you gave me. I really appreciate it.

Sorry, Joe, but I have to go with the 'more-work-for -you" crowd. I voted all of the above. (I DID vote ‘all of the above’, didn’t I?) [:D]

I vote for most of the above.
Benchwork construction
Beginning DCC (the basics)
Advanced DCC (programming, sound, etc)
Installing DCC decoders
Steam loco detailing/weathering
Diesel loco detailing/weathering
Rolling stock detailing/weathering
Basic scenery (plaster, rock molds, etc)
Advanced scenery (trees, water, etc)
Building and installing bridges
Building structures
Prototype operation (the basics)
Prototype operation (Timetable & Train Order)
Maintenance (track cleaning, rolling stock maintenance, etc)

I’d like to see operational videos. but all of them would be really nice

Okay, let’s agree that many of you would like to see them all.

Now, help me out. Which one should I do FIRST? Take your answer to this question and VOTE for that one.

That way I’ll know where to start. [:D]

Advanced DCC (programming, sound, etc)

Interesting … so far the steam era seems to be winning out. Any diesel modelers out there who would be willing to vote and even the score? [:-^]

Okay, I voted for the first, Designing Layouts, simply because it should be offered soonest for the benefit of the new people that seem to be joining us these days, whether here or elsewhere. It would help to get ‘us’ all on the same page…if you catch my drift.

if I were permitted to vote for one more, it would be the one for bridges. Mine turned out fine, but I think that luck played a part.

Well it looks like the Diesel guys have now voted in force … [:D]

I’m going to stick with Steam Weathering (I don’t own any diesels). I think between your video and Aggro’s article, I could get a pretty good-looking stable of workhorses. Right now, I’m just kind of running blind.
Tom [:I]

Joe,

I would like to see them all. Cannot really vote for any before others, but if I had to, I would like to see (1) weathering (locomotives, diesels, rolling stock, structures), (2) scenery (all phases, including structure construction), (3) DCC (all phases), (4) design and prototype operations, (5) maintenance, and (6) layout construction – in that order. My order of preference is based on where I am with my own layout and what I need at this stage. I have enjoyed your DVDs so far and look forward to the next release. Also enjoy your Forum Clinics. Have learned much from both. Thanks.

John:

You’re welcome … glad you like my current video efforts. My plans following the 5 volume Siskiyou Line series is to move to producing model RR how-to video shorts based on various topics, and making them available over the internet as streaming or downloadable.

We’ll see how DVD sales go compared to direct over the internet. Right now, burning, packaging, and shipping DVDs is a lot of work. Moving to direct internet delivery would bypass all that. [:D]
