How was clay hualed?

I am modeling an area West of Saint Louis. One of the bulk materials hauled was clay from central Missouri to the brick yards in St. Louis. I am wondering what kind of rolling stock would have been used in the 1940’s or even 1950’s.

Since you are asking about a specific movement on a specific railroad in a specific time period, suggest you contact the MP or Frisco historical society (I would imagine one or the other was involved). Someone in those societies should be aware of the movement. Websites are shown at left under “Groups”.

I can’t help you with the prototype you are modeling but a similar type of operation in Canada has a web site - to get to it do a search on excite for Claybank Brick Plant Canada. This is a national historic sight. They may be able to provide some info. I believe small hopper cars were used. The plant will be part of the tours for the PNR regional convention in 2002.
