How wide should my road lines be?

I was wondering how wide My road lines should be.(HO scale) I was thinking some where around 1/16 to 1/8.(Of a inch) I’m going to be painting them on a main road through town. What would be the correct width for the lines?

Just measure a real road line and divide by 87.

I could. But I don’t want to risk getting hit by a car.[;)] Is there be site where I could find the mesurments?

I used 1/32" ChartPak tape for my roadlines and they look pretty good, if I do say so myself.

The tape comes in a mat or glossy finish. The matt finsh that looks pretty good.

I put down a single strip of tape in the middle of the road and apply the stripes to each side of that for proper spacing. Then I pulled up the strip in the middle.

What you see in the picture has been rolled, with a wall paper edge roller, to firmly seal it to the road.

I think 1/16" would look right for HO scale. ChartPak tape is available at art supply stores.

Don’t go on the main streets to measure, you can measure the lines at a parking lot.

Why do you give a sarcastic answer to someone with a legitimate question - and a possibly dangerous one at that! [:(!]

It’s not sarcastic. It’s realistic.

There are many, many locations were one could measure pavement markings without being in traffic.

Before there was an internet, lots of us actually went out and measured things, took pictures, and so on, for ourselves. We survived.

If you model the modern era US, you can start here (if you don’t wish to measure) - and of course divide by 87.1 [:P]

MUTCD Pavement Markings (intro)

Oh, and the quick answer for normal longitudal lines (i.e. lane markers) is 100 to 150 mm (4 to 6 in) wide.

1/16" wide on your HO roadway would be approxiamately 6" in the real world. That is what I use on my roadways, anything smaller to me looks a little too small.
