How?

my question is this how do you fund your train hobby. For me I have to do work in my garage to fund my addiction.[xx(]. My wife calls is my crack cocain for junkys. I can’t wait for saterday morning to go to the hobby shop. And spend all the money I made that week in the garage.

I work day shift as an accountant, and at night I´m an MBA criminal. Mugging, robbing, stealing, snatching old ladies´ handbags, you name it.

I do some custom painting, and I save my Loonies and Doubloons ($1 and $2 coins) when I can.

I do alot of work around the house. Im working on building a brick wall for my dad. That should be a couple hundred bucks. Plus I sell stuff on Ebay. Its amazing how fast a layout can suck up money![:O]

I haven’t quite figured that one out yet. I still have over 200 locos left on my ‘must have’ list.

I got rid of my ex in 1988(Big D), and kept the house and kid. My son never complained about the trains! He is out of school, and has a good job(Chef), so all of my funds can be spent however I want. We have some folks at the local club who are constantly devising schemes to hide their purchases - Glad I left that long ago!

I do a lot of custom painting in the area and on EBAY. The rest of it is from my secret stash… I keep all loose change from week to week, while Im away at work, it adds up pretty quick.

I skip Lunch. i get 10 bucks a week if i do that. and i also return bottles for 10cents at a time.

I use half of my income from my part time job. No part time work, no spending money. More work, more money.

I’ve discovered something, though. You can have time and no money or you can have money and no time. There is no in between.

Although I’m not broke, I am not into spending a lot of money on my hobbies. Living in CA, you have to pull all the extra you’ve got into your property. It’s nuts here.

I’m in the planning stages of a layout, and I plan on tracking all my costs more or less, so I know how much this hobby costs.

So far I’ve got about $100 or so into a BB Loco, 3 Athearn BB cars, and an MRC power pack.

On the shopping list: Basic DCC system (figure $200 or so), more locos (that will never end, will it?) lumber, and maybe styrofoam for benchwork. Going to handlay track - so I’ll havfe some major savings in turnouts.

Being a longtime armchair MRR’er, this hobby hasn’t cost much for me the past decade or so - just buying our favorite Mag, but then again I haven’t gotten nearly the enjoyment that others have out of the hobby. Too many things going on in life!

It’s always easy to push hobbies aside for Relationships, family, career pursuits, etc. But I will say I enjoy hobbies most when I don’t really have time for them - when I’ve totally had time for them, I wasn’t as interested. Go figure!

I’m still new to this hobby and I’m starting my layout this weekend. I’m am noticing this is not a cheap or one weekend kind of hobby, but i’m looking forward to the whole process of putting a layout together.

Luckily, for me, my 2yr old daughter loves trains, so I can blame the costs on her. At least I tell my wife this. [:D]

Well, I don’t smoke or drink, and my main expense is diesel. I view it as investing for the future - models I buy now will still be of use in years to come.

Musical Genius, RETIRED!!! Every once in awhile I get done paying the bills and have a little money to spend at the LHS. Sometimes I even spend money I don’t have… (I won’t go there.)

I sometimes “skim a little off the top” of the paycheck but usually do a little contracting on the side for extra $$$. I’d be fine moneywise if we just had one hobby. [:D]

I try to be very careful in what I buy, and I don’t own a house yet. That should change this summer though (the house part, not the careful part).

I wanted to break into the model railroad industry by marketing sorry plastic knockoffs of Kadee couplers, but somebody beat me to the punch.[:)]

I love this forum, you can find so many new and different ways to spell English words and use verbs in dis here forum place. It’s like dictionaries never existed. :-))
