I have returned to this board. Recently I found a small goldmine buy.

I was on this forum about 4 years ago, now I’m back. I have a partially constructed layout I need to finish if time and money, (& the economy) will let me.

The goldmine I’m talking about is a Thrift Store in my area. I found a stack of brand new, Athearn,Locos, blue box kits for $9, Atlas and other Locos some with radio control ready gear. Also Athearn BB AND “Ready to Roll” rolling stock for $4. I bought several SD-40 & 45 Locos, a few tank cars, hoppers and gondolas for $4. I did’nt have enough money at the time to buy all the stuff, and came back later and found most of it was sold; too bad. They must have come from an estate sale or something, and the folks at that store evidently did’nt understand the value.

I thought it was a stroke of gold luck and thought I’d share this fine experience with the Model RR crew here.

You might be handled with kid gloves here though because your first post looks out of the norm.

Huh???

Bob

Don’t know what the “huh” is for, but I said clearly I was on this message board 4 years ago and was just sharing my story of a good deal I stumbled across. What’s the big mystery?

Welcome back. By the question marks in the second response, I think he is questioning what the first ment. I’m not sure either.

I would say you got a good deal and it was too bad you didn’t have some more cash in your pocket. For something like that, maybe could even have justified the CC (gads!). Might even been worth running home and running right back. Hope they all work well for you. They will certainly help keep the overall cost of your hobby down.

Good luck,

It would be nice if you also shared where this gold mine is and what it is named.

Yeah this one had me scratching my head as well? It’s always good to find a deal it give you a great feeling inside. About a year a go just when I started working on the new layout we were out one Sunday going some place and I mentioned to my wife I wanted to stop by this hobby shop that had been opened for a short time but I never had a chance to stop in. So I stop in there and the place is 98% slot car stuff with a couple of R/C cars and i ask the kid behind the counter where is your model railroad stuff you have advertised. He points to tow of those free standing shelving units. That was the remaining 1%. I was so disgusted I almost just turned and walked out. The woman who ran the place saw me looking at the stuff and said they were phasing out all of tier model railroad stuff and everything was discounted. Now that perked my ears up like a hunting dog that just got a scent of a rabbit. I waled over and picked up an Atlas #6 custom line turnout and it was marked $4.98. I thought i was misreading it and asked her the price she looked at it and said $4.98 sorry the tags are so small. I said oh no problem as I took every turnout she had 18 #6’s 4 #8’s and 6 #4’s a couple of crossing and some sectional track. A savings of $220 Like the O/P I didn’t have enough money on me to buy anything else but over the next few weeks I returned ad purchased all their Woodland Scenics Hydrocal, rock molds and some W/S ready made trees all for what I found out later on was dealer cost. The only bad thing about the whole deal was I balked on two Atlas DCC locomotives that I could have gotten for something like $65 but hey some other train guy got himself a deal. Glad you got your deal sounds like a great score.
