I’m looking into building a layout in our sparebedroom and was wanting a few tips. The room is about 10x12 feet. i was wanting to build a layout that would run along the wall but not a destination type but a loop.
I was looking into a mining style or logging set somewhere between the 20’s and the 50’s. What railroads would be good? Any tips on what the layout should look like?
Please help!
I would like to set it in a relatively flat area with a few mountains. Some small towns. A bridge or two maybe. And at least one tunnel.
Here is a few links to some very nice logging railroad models, 10x12 is plenty of room for a logging road.

Try googling narrow gauge ming or logging . I found lots of ideas there.

How about a nice 4x8 in the rooms center with a narrow siding along one wall. This should give you plenty of modelling space and people space. My first “Adult” layout was also in a spare 10x12 bedroom. This worked well for me. It was inviting to walk into, had no duck under and the siding wall had no windows to contend with. I would also point out that a bedroom layout should reflect a finished room with a good museum like quality layout structure. After all it’s not the basement or the garage. By making the benchwork as attractive as possible and perhaps using some type of shelving around the room or built into the layout bench work the overall appearance of your bedroom layout will be an excellent place to display and run your model railroad equipment. Good Luck .
I designed an HO standard-gauge logging layout for a client who had a slightly smaller space, a little under 9’X11’. The design used 22" R curves and mostly hand-laid #4 turnouts, although with a little tweaking PECO C75 or C100 small- and medium radius turnouts could also work.

You can read about it in more detail at:

Here’s a (rare for me) 3-D image from the web site:

That looks like a very interesting layout.
Thanks! We got more into that space than I thought we would.
