HAS ANYONE ANY KNOWLEDGE OF AMERICAN MODEL TOYS INC. PASSENGER CARS IN O GAUGE? ALL THE INFO THATT I HAVE SEEMS TO SAY THAT AMT IS IN S GAUGE BUT I PURCHASED A BOX OF 1950’S LIONEL STUFF AND TWO BEAUTIFUL PASSENGER CARS[OBSERVATIONA ND A BAGGAGE] WERE IN THE BOX AND THEY ARE THE SAME SIZE AS LIONEL AND RUN ON LIONEL TRACKS. They have a good history of manufacturers including AMT. What you describe sounds a bit like American Model Toys (AMT) from the late 40’ and early 50’s.

There is also a Greenberg book called Greenberg’s Guide to Kusan Trains. Published a while back but sometimes appears on ebay. It covers Kusan, AMT, Kris Models and Williams reproductions. It has a small section relating to the die cast AMT passenger cars.

I have seen these before since they were made in my home town, Auburn, Indiana many years ago. Sometimes they show up around town at garage sales, but not as often anymore.

AMT came out with their streamline coaches soon after Lionel came out with their new ATSF and NYC F3’s in 1948. Lionel didn’t come out with streamline coaches until 1952 so people bought the AMT coaches to go with their F3’s. What makes the AMT ATSF coaches special is they have smooth chrome roofs verses the ribbed roofs on the Lionel cars. They are almost mirror like and reflect layout lighting well for some spectacular night time running. The AMT roofs look so appealing, Lionel made their 1991 Superchief cars with smooth chrome roofs much like the AMT cars. Other appealing features of the AMT cars are the shape of the observation tail and baggage car doors. The AMT cars are moderately priced and make a great addition to a postwar Lionel collection.
