Ok, so I haven’t had enough coffee this morning…what’s the history behind this unit?
WOW, look at those trucks! how long they been around? Definetly got to be from GM&O trade SD40’s! Definently first order, though. They had some problems with them. IC order some stuff that was SD40-2 specific and didn’t quite work. Something about the Alternators? You’ll hear more on this, definently.
When was that picture taken? I saw that unit up here not too long ago, like maybe a week-ish. I’d say it came after IC 6004 and before IC 6006.[:D]
Yesterday morning, around 6 am…it was in our tie up track.
We borrowed it to run a loaded grain train out to Cargil, and pulled an empty back with it…left yesterday afternoon with the BNSF…
Glenn yard, right? SD70’s are common there.
Uh…no, Houston Texas…
I saw 6005 and 6008 in Effingham, ILL last summer or early fall togather. Thought I had a photo, but haven’t found it yet.

Very old first order IC (not ex-GM&O) SD40, since upgraded to SD40-2 standards electrically. Never had Dynamic Brakes. IC 6000 - 6005 were SD40s, 6006 starts the long frame SD40As. The SD40As had 5000 gal. fuel tanks and Dynamic Brakes when built(since removed).
And to add to what Beaulieu has said the first IC SD40s were part of EMD order #5732, EMD serial #s 33244-33249. The IC 6005 was the last of those. It was built in December 1967 making it 39 and a half years young. Thanks to A J Kristopans and X2200 South for the diesel data.
Opened my mouth before I really studied the pictures. Looked alot like Glenn in Chicago and assumed (A[censored]s of U and ME) it was an SD70, a stronghold there. I thought all the SD40/40A’s were long gone.[banghead] Somewhat right, though, they were on GM&O trucks[;)][8D]! Sorry[V]
Well, those trucks arent that rare, alot of FURX and HLCX leasers still have the flexicoil trucks, and all ex SD40s still have them,SD45s, etc. Even some SD50s. These units are now all classified as SD40-2Rs. The GM&O ones in question (the coolest ones IMO) start at 6050 and end with the 6071.
