IC SD28

Has anyone built or know someone who built an IC SD28? I would like to build one but I am not sure how to do one.

Neil,

I have not built one, but I would start with an Atlas non-D/B SD35 - Same basic chassis. The carbody is the same except for the roof details. The SD28 is a ‘non-turbo’ version of the SD35, and has only 2 radiator fans on the rear, no ‘turbo’ stack and a pair of normal exhaust stacks over the engine area. The usual ‘Cannon’ parts would be a good start. IIRC, the IC units had small fuel tanks when they got them for the Columbus & Greenville, but IC later added full length fuel tanks. They did not have D/B gears as well.

You might want to check with the Illinois Central Modeling group on Yahoo Groups.

You’ll have to join but it’s no cost to you and you’ll have a core group of IC/G modelers at your fingertips.

Happy New Year!

A lot of the Illinois Central locomotive designations were a result of rebuilds at the Paducah, Kentucky, shops. They would take a GP9, for example, and redesignate it as a GP10 when it came out of Paducah. In many cases there was nothing on the exterior that looked different, and in other cases they added something that changed the exterior appearance; so your starting point would be the next lower SD number that is available and then add whatever the IC shops changed.

The SD28 is an EMD built model it is not an IC rebuild.

EMD built only 6 SD28’s in 1965. Four went to Reserve Mining, #1233-1236, and the other two went to Columbus & Greenville, #701 & 702.

The IC rebuilt SD24’s and SD35’s into SD20’s.
