I know a lot of you use airbrushes to weather your structures and rolling stock, but i have a bit of a problem in that area. I have no airbrush. Or 100 bucks. is there something that I can use to provide the same effect as an airbrush, without the need for an air compressor?
buy a cheap can of matt varnish. spray the lightest coat you can over what you are weathering. it will make it slightly tackey for about 30 minutes. use weathering chalks. they will stick to the varnish.
my biggest recomendation is ALWAYS have a photo of a similar item (preferably several several hundred pictures!) look at the way the rust accumulates in corners and around hatches and rainstrips.
edit: and no need to use anything else with them either , they contain their own adhesive and just rubbing them on makes them stick . also no need to spray a protective coat of dullcoat or whatever after application , they don’t seem to rub off
I have weathered lots of cars and locos to my own satisfaction (and no-one’s been rude about them yet) using acrylic paints and water soluble oils (both from artists supplies) using all sorts of brushes from fine fans to 1/2" deers foot… this is on H0.
The main thing is to be willing to take off more paint than you put on.
If you look through my profile you will find other stuff I’ve posted on this.
