I would have a Union Pacific ACF Astra Dome cars. I rode in one as a boy on a two day - two night train trip in the 1950s. I’ve always wanted to see one again.

A modified Milwaukee Road Skytop Sleeper Lounge and a 20th Century Limited dining car. The sleeper/lounge has 8 bedrooms so I’d remodel it into I large bedroom, a full size bathroom, a guest bedroom and a multipurpose room. I’d also have a larger kitchen and less tables in the diner and possibly a small seating area at the far end of the diner behind a partition to act as an entryway.

thats neat as well especially with the offset dome on it as a house i bet it would have a good bit of room

how cool and creative its almost like youve pre planned for someone to ask this question the skytop sleeper killed me when i looked it up man the veiw would be astounding

If I got to pick a railcar to be my house I’d choose a caboose because in my opinion when done correctly cabooses make the best cabins / tiny Homes

I have a documentary on VHS tape that I recorded off Public Broadcasting back in the 90’s called “Australia By Rail” (highly recommend) and the host rode just about every train in the country from excursion and museum trains to the Indian Pacific straight across the nulibor. At one point he stopped home to pick up his Trafalgar Velocipede for a run on his very own abandoned rail line. There he explains and shows off his “house” which is made up entirely of classic Victorian first class railway carriages. Since seeing that, and remembering a restaurant I went to when I was very young, I’ve thought often about what I would do given the opportunity to have my own house on bogies.

The restaurant was Victoria Station by the way.

Come to think of it, I’d probably want a baggage car or three for model railroad space.

Welcome aboard JCrailfan!

welcome man i cant say a caboose is too tiny really because i been inside them at the Saint Louis Musiem of Transportation very cool place to go

I can vouch for that…

Is that Wilson?

My old boy, of course. He was there for every inch of the design and construction of the caboose. He’s buried in the shadow of the car on the north side.

Had a good friend, Tyler Robbins, that had a completely restored car, that one would be the one I would have as a house!!

Ed, I know you’ve posted them before, but could you find and post some photos of the inside of your caboose.

Since we are talking about a railcar to live in, your caboose illustrates the idea perfectly.

Bay window caboose …

Now your talking!!
