I went to remove the horn-hook coupler from the tender truck of my IHC Mogul and the entire mount for the coupler snapped off. I either need a new truck frame, or replace both trucks with Kadee trucks (one of them w/ a coupler mounted, the other w/o)
Where can I get the IHC truck frame? Or which Kadee trucks fit?
I really don’t think it’s possible to mount one on the tender, but I could give it a shot. First thing, it’ll take a good number of shims, or an underset shank coupler (hey- now there’s an idea) What do you recommend I use for screws to mount a KD coupler box?
Yes the trucks are great, except the coupler mount broke off of the rear one.
A 2-56 will fit thru the larger hole in the center of a #5 pocket, and a 0-80 screw will fit the smaller mounting holes on the side.
I’m going to the Great Train Expo this weekend, and there’s a dealer there who has tons of IHC parts. I don’t remember seeing those particular trucks, but I could keep an eye out for you.
It will come in handy for all sorts of projects. As you said, you will probably need to make some kind of shim to make a flat surface and get the right height. Making a shim is easy.
You can just glue the whole coupler box to the bottom of the tender with ACC (Superglue). I have done it many times and it works great. Occasionally they will fall off from rough handling, but you just glue them back on.
If you need to remove them or change them, just snap them off at the glue joint.
