While at a race at Gateway, I killed rain time by
driving around the Granite City/Madison area
Railfanning and ran across a delelict “high line”
that per my Rail Atlas appears to be an old IT line to McKinley Bridge. I was right near an NS
auto facility. If above is correct, how long has it been since that “high line” was in service, and
did Norfolk and Western use it after merging the IT.
the track your talking about has been out of service for 10 years that i can remember. if we are talking about the bridge with the 90ft section missing. now if you are talking about the track that goes by the railhead that ns services off the brooklyn main that track that goes over that is the trra wiggins main and is still in service. as info the railhead is owned by cassens transport and they load new dodge vehicles from fenton mo. there
thanks, that’s exactly it. There was a section of
the trestle out, but the tracks were still hanging
between the intact structures. Was that an old
NS/NW line, and are they just going to leave it there to rot away? As I remember it was quite
lengthy, stretching for what seemed like almost a mile to the west of the auto facility and power plant.
well its been at least 10 years maybe more and they have done nothing to it. i dont see anything in the future as it would cost more to fix and since they have other routes they use now going to the same places. i would rather see them tear it down as it is a saftey hazard. i really dont know who the owners are/was. i dont believe it was the ns or nw from what i get from talking to the old head yard masters in st.louis or granite city. maybe some one else knows
