Illinois Central Railroad

Prior to being incorporated into CN, IC maintained a roster of spartan cab SD70s. As far as I know, IC was one of the last major roads that didn’t have wide nose locomotives in the late 90s. I guess if CN didn’t pick up IC, they would cave into EMD or GE and order death star-clad wide nose SD70M/M-2s or GE’s. Judging by their recent history, I guess they still would have gone with EMD for newer purchases, though a death star Dash 9 or Gevo would have been different for that road. I think that IC, as ICG in the 70s and early 80s, had U-boats and Alco centuries, or maybe even Dash 7s on their roster. I don’t believe any of those were ever painted in IC black with death star when they introduced that scheme in the late 80s.

I seem to remember hearing that both NS and Conrail has spartan cab SD-70s–or maybe it was just Conrail and NS acquired them.

Speaking of old IC power about a year or so ago, I was treated to a real surprise when I found an IC GP-10 heading a manifest outside of Gilman. I hated those engines so much, but even old enemies produce feelings of fondness when they are in their twilight.

Amongst all those EMDs, IC/ICG had 6 U30Bs, 10 U33Cs and 6 C636s. There were never any -7 GEs. I found this site http://www.illinoiscentral.net/rosters/alltimeroster.html through Craig Rutherford’s link at http://www.thedieselshop.us/ Look up the 1100s, the 5000s, and the 5050s for the above units.

ns had 25 of them before the con-fail merger and then we recieved 25 more. then we starrted getting the wide nose 70s

NS, Conrail and IC were three of the last railways that didn’t go with wide-cabs with their SD70s. IC’s SD70s came in two separate orders. IC seemed to have a very strong commitment to EMD. I don’t think they bought anything that wasn’t from EMD after the failed GE U-Boat/Alco C636 experience.
