Is there an Internet source for specifications of Illinois Central steam power in the 1950s? I need something that pins the specs down to particular classes identifiable by number. Failing that, maybe somebody has a book that has this info and would answer some questions for me.
I have specs on some of IC’s classes, but they’re collected from many sources and vary in level of detail. Some listings are pretty much complete, others only haveinfo that can be extracted from a photo. Which ones are you interested in?
I have photos I took of several IC engines in the 1950s on my web site, http://members.aol.com/rlsteam . Specifically, I would like dimensions for the following:
Pacific No. 2086
Mikados Nos. 1362 and 1518
The 900 series Consolidations (e.g., 902 and 908)
The 2500-series Mountains (I have most dimensions for these)
What I am looking for is:
driver diameter
cylinder diameter and stroke
boiler pressure
locomotive weight
tractive effort (main plus booster if any),
evaporative heating surface
grate area
tender capacity
original builder and date
date of Paducah rebuild if applicable
Any of the above information is helpful. The “Standard Steam Locomotives” site has some specifications for the Mountains but not for the others.

Wt. tender - 225,500 lbs
TE - 70,125 lbs (same TE note as above)
Evap htg surface+superheating surface - no data
Grate area - no data
Tender capacity - 24 t, 11,000 gal
Date built (don’t have builder) - 1937-1942
Rebuild date (above data may be rebuild, don’t know)
Specifications can vary depending on the source. The best thing to look for is locomotive diagrams. Sometimes RR historical societies have them for sale in their on-line book stores. Wish I knew more about IC, but I’m more of an easterner (PRR, NYC, N&W, C&O…), so the above stats are copied from several sources: Pocket Guide to American Locomotives, Mainline Modeler 9/84, and America Locomotives.
