Info needed on GP35's

Hi gang

I am looking to make a Wheeling & Lake Erie GP35 engine. These were high nose engines and I have the Cannon parts here to make them. What I need to know is who makes a good quality HO scale engine to use as a starting point? I don’t want to mess with the Athearn as the hood width is way to wide. I also see that bachmann make one but the train set loco is not for me. Does kato still make one? It seems to me they used to. What about Proto? Do they make one? I looked around but, did not see one.

Thanks for any help.

Dan

Check out the Athearns again! The too wide bodies werre years ago with the open frame motors - the new ones should be OK. My [2c]

The Athearn RTR GP35s used improved RPP molds for the bodies. They are now scale width hoods. the other choice would be a Kato GP35. Check ebay for one. Paint scheme doesn’t matter since you will be custom painting it.

Hi Dan,

I have just purchased an Athern Genesis GP-35, in Western Pacific silver and orange and it is a slim and trim unit ( very accurate ) and a great operating loco.

I think you would be well pleased with them.

Are you sure that is an Athearn Genesis and not an Athearn RTR? The Athearn upgraded RPP shell isn’t bad if you overlook all the door latches (some paint schemes hide better than others). If you are going to have to spend nearly as much as you would for a Kato you might as well get a Kato (better drive and latches) MHO.

If you are really interested in a Kato – Look up this item number in E-bay.

I used the RPP shell a few years back with a modified Athearn BB GP-35 frame and upgraded drive:
