Info on BLI sound equiped locos.

Alright im thinking of getting a SD40-2 with sound installed on my layout, but the only problem is i have a DC powered layout. What can i get to make the sound work on DC?

-Kade

The run of BLI sd40-2 Blue Line locos are DC - not DCC. You have to add your own decoder oif you want DCC.

Kade,

If it’s the QSI chip, it will run on both DC and DCC. To utilize all the sounds, you’ll need the Quantum Engineer attachment:

Here’s the low down on the QE from the QSI web site:

If it’s BLI’s new Blueline series, you don’t need anything. To change it to DCC, you just plug in a decoder in the socket.

Wow, you’re organized, Tom!! [:D]

Crandell,

Not really. I just know what keys to type. Google is our friend…[:)]

While the throttle above makes it so more sounds can be heard and used it is not needed to get sound from a QSI decoder on DC. By just adding power you will start the loco and not move it, more power revvs up the motor and starts the loco moving and after the loco is moving you use the direction switch to blow the horns. There are a few other things that you can do by flipping the direction switch fast 2 or 3 times but I cant remember what that is.

I have one of BLI’s SD40-2s and the loco is great. Sound is good tho my buddy says that is it not a turbocharged engine (I dont care it sounds like a train) the detail is crisp and sharp throughout the loco. I think that you will be very happy with it unless you take inventory on rivets, you will be missing only one or 2

The actual device is the small box with all the buttons at the top of the picture. It’s not a complete power pack. You can use it with your existing power pack to add full sound snad programming capability.

Bachmann makes a nice SD40-2

That is good to know. I can get that part for 39.99 at trainworld so it wont put me back to far, the engine is only 129.99 too. I’ll have to do some painting to get it prototypically accurate. Im getting one in Burlington Northern and there walkways are supposed to be black not green as they painted oh well it will be a fun little project for my first sound eqquiped unit.
